Tambayan Community Hub: Empowering Migrant Workers Through Dialogue and Advocacy
ActionDignity, in partnership with Migrante Alberta and The International Migrant Alliance (IMA) hosted a Community Conversation Circle of Tambayan, a Migrant Workers Community Hub on November 30, 2024. The gathering was dedicated to fostering community, learning, and support among migrant workers in Calgary. Participants shared stories, reflected on their unique challenges, and discussed opportunities for collective empowerment.
The Tambayan initiative emerged from a pressing need to address the socioeconomic, cultural, and systemic challenges faced by migrant workers. Yasmin from IMA presented the international migrant workers status and the challenges they and their families are facing. In the presentation, participants discussed the major migrant issues including: No mobility, cultural isolation, lack of access to permanency residency, long family separation and exploited by employers.
Through this hub, Migrante Alberta and ActionDignity created a safe space for participants to voice their concerns, learn from shared experiences, and explore ways to advocate for migrant rights. We are calling for collective efforts to:
- Address the root causes of forced migration.
- Advocate for better labor rights and pathways to permanency for migrant workers in Canada.
- Celebrate the contributions of migrants as individuals with dignity and aspirations, not just as workers.
The initiative served not only as a conversation circle but also as a launchpad for actionable change, empowering migrants to organize and assert their rights in the face of systemic challenges.
