Over 100 Community Members Unite for Human Rights Day Event
On December 11th, we had an inspiring Human Rights Day event that brought together over 100 community members for a powerful discussion on Human Rights and Equity, with a focus on the experiences of newcomers and racialized communities.
The evening featured a compelling Keynote Address by Kathryn Oviatt, KC, Chief of the Commission and Tribunals at the Alberta Human Rights Commission. Kathryn provided invaluable insights into human rights and equity, setting the stage for a deep and impactful dialogue.
We were also honored to welcome special guests Parmeet Singh Boparai, MLA for Calgary-Falconridge, and Khaleel Bhatti, member of the Alberta Anti-Racism Advisory Council and Chair of the Working Group on Education and Cultural Awareness. Their presence underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing systemic racism and promoting equity.
One highlight of the evening was the case study discussions, where participants explored two real-world examples of human rights violations and racism against racialized communities. Attendees shared personal experiences that resonated with the cases and engaged in group discussions on community responses and potential solutions.
Key recommendations from the discussions included:
- Hosting educational sessions on human rights for community members.
- Implementing mandatory antiracism training for service providers.
- Integrating inclusive education into school curriculums.
- Delivering awareness sessions on available human rights resources.
The event closed with an active and heartfelt exchange of ideas, reminding us that every voice matters and that collective action is essential for meaningful change.
Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this impactful event. Together, we can build a more equitable and inclusive future.
