Understanding Lateral Racism: A Hidden Dimension of Discrimination

In discussions about racism, we often focus on the obvious, more overt forms of discrimination perpetrated by dominant races against marginalized races. However, there is another, less-recognized form of racism that occurs within and between racialized groups. This is known as lateral racism.

What is Lateral Racism?

Lateral racism occurs when individuals or groups from one racialized ethnic background discriminate against or marginalize individuals or groups from another racialized ethnic background. This behavior is often driven by a perceived sense of superiority or power over the other races. There are two main types of lateral racism:

  • Personal-level Lateral Racism: This type of lateral racism manifests in direct interactions between individuals. Examples include bullying, social exclusion, or intimidation based on ethnic differences.
  • Systemic-level Lateral Racism: This type occurs within institutions and systems. It includes practices like hiring less qualified candidates from the same ethnic group over more suitable candidates from different ethnic backgrounds, leading to discrimination and disenfranchisement.

Vertical Racism vs. Lateral Racism

To fully grasp the concept of lateral racism, it’s essential to differentiate it from vertical racism. Vertical racism is directed from a dominant race with social, economic, or political power towards races perceived as inferior. In contrast, lateral racism targets individuals within the same racial or ethnic group or other ethnic communities.

While vertical racism is widely recognized and condemned, lateral racism remains less acknowledged and rarely discussed. This lack of recognition makes it a persistent and insidious problem within and between marginalized communities.

The Impact of Lateral Racism

The effects of lateral racism can be profound and far-reaching, impacting both individuals and communities. Some of the significant impacts include:

  • Intra and Inter-group Tensions: Lateral racism fosters distrust and hostility within and between ethnic groups, leading to strained relationships and conflicts.
  • Hierarchies Within Ethnic Groups: It creates and reinforces hierarchies within ethnic communities, where some members feel superior to others based on ethnic differences.
  • Social Exclusion: Individuals within the group may experience social exclusion, feeling isolated and unsupported by their community.
  • Powerlessness and Disunity: Lateral racism can render individuals and groups powerless and disunited, making it harder to address broader systemic racism effectively.

Why is it Important to Understand Lateral Racism?

Recognizing and addressing lateral racism is crucial for several reasons:

  • Addressing Systemic Racism: By understanding lateral racism, we can better address the complexities of systemic racism and create more comprehensive solutions.
  • Supporting Marginalized Communities: Acknowledging and combating lateral racism helps support marginalized communities by promoting unity and solidarity.
  • Fostering Dialogue and Understanding: Open discussions about lateral racism foster greater understanding and empathy among different ethnic groups.
  • Promoting Inclusivity and Equity: Addressing lateral racism is a step towards promoting inclusivity and equity within and between ethnic communities, ensuring that all individuals feel valued and respected.

Conclusion

Lateral racism is a hidden yet pervasive form of discrimination that occurs within and between racialized groups. Understanding and addressing this issue is vital for fostering unity, equity, and inclusivity in our communities. By acknowledging lateral racism, we take an essential step towards dismantling all forms of discrimination and promoting a more just and equitable society.
