On August 22, ActionDignity’s Y-SLAAM (Youth System Leadership Anti-Racist Artists Making Change) project concluded with an inspiring youth arts showcase titled One Stage, Many Cultures.
Celebrating Calgary’s rich cultural diversity, the showcase brought young people and community members together through performances, visual art, and poetry. The creative works encouraged the audience to reflect on equity, inclusion, and the role everyone can play in building a more welcoming and anti-racist community.
Designed by Youth, for Youth
A defining feature of the showcase was the leadership of young people throughout the planning and delivery process. A dedicated group of 12 youth met regularly to design the event, taking responsibility for everything from poster creation and program development to activity coordination.
On the day of the showcase, youth contributed in many different ways. Some took to the stage or displayed their artwork, while others volunteered behind the scenes to prepare, maintain, and clean up the venue. Their collective efforts created a welcoming space where young people could share their cultures, perspectives, and talents.
The event also featured a beautiful dance performance by the Calgary Vietnamese Women’s Association, adding another vibrant expression of culture to the celebration.
