Volunteer Spotlight | Jonathan Nega: A Path Toward Social Justice

At ActionDignity, our volunteers play an essential role in driving positive change in our communities. This month, we’re excited to highlight Jonathan Nega, a dedicated youth leader whose passion for social justice and community empowerment shines through in everything he does.

A Path Toward Social Justice

After graduating from the University of Calgary with a B.A. in Law & Society, Jonathan has been deeply committed to advancing social justice and diversity. His journey with ActionDignity began in April 2019 through the Youth PLACE project, and he officially stepped into a volunteer role in June 2024. What drew him to ActionDignity was our mission to foster a just and equitable society by working alongside ethnocultural, racialized, and equity-seeking groups to make Calgary a more inclusive city.

Inspiring Leadership in Action

For Jonathan, volunteering is not only about giving time but also about active citizenship and leadership. He has taken on key roles within the Youth Community Leadership Team (YCLT) and the Black Youth Advisory Group (BYAG), where he has collaborated with peers to address critical issues affecting racialized youth—such as mental health, racism, and intersectionality.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of this work has been engaging with racialized youth through workshops, conversation circles, and community events. These experiences have strengthened my leadership skills while creating spaces for youth voices to be heard.”

Creating Impact and Driving Change

Through the volunteer work, Jonathan has found a powerful sense of purpose: standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. Jonathan saw his contributions as part of a broader movement to empower racialized and ethnocultural communities through grassroots, transformational change.

Looking ahead, Jonathan envisions ActionDignity continuing to play a central role in systems change by breaking down inequities and systemic barriers. He believes in the importance of nurturing youth leadership, supporting grassroots advocacy, and influencing public systems so that equity is not just a vision, but a lived reality for all.
