Exploring Traditional Knowledge: Indigenous Medicine Walk with Elder Pablo

On June 30, we had the privilege of hosting an Indigenous Medicine Walk guided by Elder Pablo, bringing together Black youth for a powerful and enriching experience rooted in Indigenous culture, land, and healing.

Youth walk with Elders

Indigenous medicine refers to the traditional health practices, beliefs, and knowledge systems of Indigenous peoples. These practices—often involving herbal remedies, ceremonies, and spiritual healing—are deeply connected to the land and holistic well-being, addressing not only physical but also emotional and spiritual needs.

During the walk, the youth had the unique opportunity to learn firsthand about the traditional uses of plants, the significance of ceremonies, and the rich cultural and spiritual knowledge passed down through generations. More than just a learning experience, the walk fostered mutual respect and solidarity between Indigenous and immigrant communities, encouraging dialogue and reflection on shared histories and connections to the land.

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many youth expressing that the walk deepened their understanding of Indigenous cultures and traditions. One participant shared, “It was eye-opening to see how connected Indigenous healing is to the land and how much wisdom exists in these teachings. I felt honored to be part of it.”

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Elder Pablo for generously sharing his knowledge and spirit, and to all the youth who participated with open hearts and minds. This experience is one of many steps toward strengthening intercultural relationships and honouring Indigenous ways of knowing.

Stay tuned for more upcoming initiatives that continue to bridge communities and celebrate cultural knowledge.
