Volunteer Spotlight | Yusuke Hyogo: Championing Systemic Change from the Inside Out

At ActionDignity, our work is powered not just by staff and community leaders, but also by dedicated volunteers who offer their time, talents, and lived experiences to advance equity and justice. This month, we’re proud to spotlight one of our exceptional volunteers: Yusuke Hyogo, a passionate advocate for racialized communities and a vital member of our Board Committees.

Echoing Voices, Driving Change

“I saw many newcomers falling through the cracks of systemic barriers,” Yusuke shared. “That made me want to echo their voices.”

With a strong background in working closely with newcomers, Yusuke witnessed firsthand the challenges that racialized communities face in navigating systems that were not built with their needs in mind. This experience sparked a desire not only to advocate for change, but also to shape it actively.

“ActionDignity stood out to me because it focuses on systemic change,” Yusuke said. “I felt it was the right place to share both my own experiences and those of the communities I serve.”

A Four-Year Journey of Connection and Contribution

For the past four years, Yusuke has been deeply engaged with ActionDignity, attending events, participating in initiatives, and contributing to critical discussions. What drew him in—and keeps him engaged—is ActionDignity’s commitment to building relationships with ethnocultural communities and strengthening their capacity to lead change.

“Meeting people from diverse backgrounds is one of the things I enjoy most,” Yusuke said. “It’s incredibly valuable to hear perspectives from different communities, to learn about their challenges and celebrate their successes. That shared learning helps shape how we move forward together.”

A Leadership Role with Impact

Currently, Yusuke serves as a member of both ActionDignity’s Governance Committee and the Public Policy and Social Justice Committee—two board-level working groups that guide our strategic direction and uphold our commitment to equity and community empowerment.

In these roles, he participates in regular committee meetings, helps shaping policy recommendations, and contributes to big-picture thinking about how ActionDignity can best fulfill its mission. These committees are where critical conversations happen—about governance practices, accountability, advocacy priorities, and the overall vision for systems change.

“Every time we meet, we talk about what’s working, where the gaps are, and how we can move the needle,” Yusuke explained. “It’s always inspiring to see how our shared ideas can evolve into action.”

Planting Seeds for a Just Future

Systemic change is never instant, and Yusuke understands the long-term nature of this work.

“Changing the system takes time, but I’ve seen more and more people starting to speak up and share their thoughts. That’s powerful,” Yusuke said. “It shows the impact of the work ActionDignity is doing—and I’m proud to be part of that. If we continue supporting each other, we can create meaningful, lasting change.”

Thank you to our volunteers for your leadership, heart, and commitment to systems change. Your voice helps amplify others, and your presence on our committees helps shape the future of our work.
