Volunteer Spotlight: Amber Noor’s Passion for Systemic Change

At ActionDignity, our volunteers are the heart of our work, driving meaningful change and advocating for justice within our communities. This month, we are excited to shine a spotlight on Amber Noor, a dedicated youth volunteer whose passion for systems change is making a lasting impact.

A Passion for Change

Amber Noor is currently a first-year Biomedical Sciences student at the University of Calgary. Drawn to ActionDignity’s mission of empowering racialized communities, she wanted to be part of an organization that not only addresses the mental health challenges faced by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour) youth but also works to dismantle the systemic barriers that contribute to these challenges. She saw this as a unique opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals who share a commitment to equity and inclusion.

Amber’s interest in policy and systemic change motivated her to join ActionDignity’s Youth Community Leadership Team at the beginning of this year. With a curiosity about how policies are made and why they exist in the first place, she found a meaningful space to explore and contribute to the development of proactive approaches that drive real, meaningful change. Through her volunteer work, she has been able to research innovative policies that address root causes affecting the mental health of BIPOC youth.

Building Knowledge & Connections

One of the aspects Amber enjoys most about volunteering at ActionDignity is the people she meets. Every meeting and session provide an opportunity to learn from others, engage in insightful discussions, and challenge personal perspectives. “Engaging in these conversations is always an eye-opening experience that inspires me to break the confinements I subconsciously limit my thinking to,” she shares.

The most memorable experience for Amber was attending her first Policy Advocacy session, where she had the chance to speak with a member of a city councillor’s team. “Hearing about her journey in politics and municipal government was incredibly inspiring and reinforced my passion for policy work and community advocacy”.

Making an Impact

While Amber is still in the early stages of her volunteer journey, her contributions are already making a difference. By engaging in critical discussions and bringing attention to systemic issues, she hopes to help shape policies that foster meaningful change for marginalized communities.

Her vision for ActionDignity is to continue advocating for BIPOC youth by ensuring that their voices and struggles are reflected in policies. Through her training, she has gained valuable insight into racialization and the history of oppression faced by racialized communities – not only in Canada but globally. With this knowledge, she hopes to contribute to effective policies that address systemic barriers and create lasting change.
