Community Conversation Circle Empowers Immigrant Workers with Knowledge of Labor Rights in Alberta

In a bid to empower immigrant workers with knowledge about their rights and protections under Alberta laws, a Community Conversation Circle titled “My Rights in Canada as an Immigrant Worker” was organized by ActionDignity on August 14. The event brought together 30 participants from various backgrounds to engage in an informative and interactive discussion on workers’ rights.

The Community Conversation Circle, hosted by Actiondignity, aimed to address the informational gaps faced by many immigrant workers regarding their legal rights in the workplace. The event featured a presentation by Zoe Lambart, a dedicated caseworker from the Workers’ Resources Center (WRC), who elaborated on the laws in Alberta and the safeguards they provide for workers. Participants were provided with a comprehensive overview of the rights and resources available to them, ensuring they were better equipped to navigate their work environments and make informed decisions.

Following Zoe Lambart’s presentation, the event transitioned into a lively and engaging discussion session. Participants actively shared their thoughts, concerns, and questions, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie among attendees. The diversity of perspectives and experiences brought to the table enriched the dialogue and highlighted the importance of such conversations.

Feedback from the participants was positive, with one attendee stating, “This is excellent information for workers. Actiondignity is really onto the decent work for Racialized essential workers.”

As one of ActionDignity’s program coordinators, Paban Adhikary shared, the Community Conversation Circle aims to promote awareness and knowledge among immigrant workers and meanwhile, these circles serve as safe spaces for community members to share experiences, seek advice, and collectively address challenges they might face in the Canadian workforce.
