Youth Voices Shaping Youth Justice: Community Conversation Circles in Full Swing

What does it take to build a youth justice system where every young person has the opportunity to thrive?

Over the past months, ActionDignity’s Youth Justice project team worked closely with community partners and members to talk to youth through community conversation circles. Youth joined us to share honest conversations about the realities young people face—and the changes they want to see. Together, they explored the root causes of youth involvement in the justice system and identified community-driven solutions that prioritize prevention, equity, and opportunity.

Here are some of the key messages that emerged:

  • Strong relationships and a sense of belonging help youth make positive choices.
  • Youth need better access to legal information and resources they can trust.
  • Affordable recreation, education, mentorship, and employment opportunities are essential to preventing justice involvement.
  • Culturally responsive, anti-racist, and trauma-informed approaches create more equitable outcomes.
  • Most importantly, young people deserve a seat at the table. Their lived experiences, ideas, and leadership are essential in shaping a more inclusive and responsive youth justice system.

A heartfelt thank you to every youth participant, community partner, and facilitator who contributed their voices, experiences, and ideas. Your insights will help shape the next phase of our Youth Justice (Y-Justice) Project, including Legal Literacy Workshops, Youth Systems Leadership Training, and Community Action Plans that empower youth to lead change.
