On December 10, our community gathered for a powerful and deeply moving Human Rights Day event. We heard courageous lived experiences from immigrant workers who shared the systemic barriers they continue to face in workplaces — from discrimination and unsafe conditions to the non recognition of their international credentials and work experiences. Their stories grounded us in the realities of racialized communities and reminded us why collective action matters.

Our keynote speaker, Chief of the Commission and Tribunals, Alberta Human Rights Commission, Zabeda Yaqoob,K.C. delivered an impactful address titled “Human Rights and Racialized Canadians in Workplaces.” She highlighted the urgent need to strengthen protections, advance policy change, and build workplaces where dignity, equity, and safety are non-negotiable.

Participants also had meaningful conversion and explored actionable steps to address systemic barriers to equitable employment for immigrant workers.

Thank you to our performer, Dr. Jebunnessa Chapola and her beautiful daughters for bringing us a wonderful cultural singing and dance. Thank you to everyone who showed up, listened, learned, and committed to being part of the change. Together, we continue to push for workplaces — and a society — where every person’s rights are upheld.
