PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The People’s CAFE program will help address barriers to social participation and increase the capacity of ethnocultural organizations to focus on systemic barriers to social participation. Related to this desired outcome, this project intends to increase participation by racialized communities in projects which address barriers to social participation. Specifically, ActionDignity will build the anti-racism capacity of ethnocultural organizations and leaders within Calgary. The project will deepen understanding of racism and facilitate community-led actions to address systemic barriers to social participation. A key element of the project is to raise the level of understanding of ethnocultural communities on racism and discrimination based on their lived experiences and connect these to community as well as larger issues of policy and systems.

Specifically, we focus on:

  • Developing a deeper understanding of the issues and challenges diverse groups are experiencing
  • increased knowledge and understanding of anti-racism from an intersectional perspective (Ex. Anti-Black, anti-Asian, and anti-Indigenous hate, and discrimination against racialized essential workers)
  • action ideas to foster equitable social participation
  • Increased opportunities to discuss and challenge racism within the city, including responding to race-based hate incidents
  • Increased capacity for cross-cultural and cross-equity collaboration
  • Provide relevant training and skill development in the community
