It was a thought-provoking evening yesterday as ActionDignity hosted its Labour Day Celebration event, Echoes of Equity: Stories from Racialized Workers.
The heart of the evening was the powerful storytelling by three courageous workers, who shared deeply personal experiences about the realities of being racialized in the workplace. Their stories reminded us of the barriers workers continue to face and the urgent need for systemic change.
What made this storytelling unique was the lens through which it was told: each worker shared their narrative through a personal item symbolic of their work journey—whether a uniform, a tool, or a piece of clothing. These items served as powerful entry points into conversations about labour, identity, struggle, and resilience.
To support the storytellers, ActionDignity partnered them with a dedicated writing coach, ensuring their voices were nurtured and their narratives carried with authenticity and strength. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Barb Howard for her guidance in shaping these stories with care and skill.
We also thank Jay Zapata, President of Migrante Alberta, who led the reflection portion of the evening, connecting the stories to present-day issues and encouraging dialogue on possible solutions for change.
This Labour Day, we honour the voices of workers and recommit to our shared vision of fairness, dignity, and equity in workplaces and communities.
