A Success Story: Empowering East African Communities Through English Literacy

In 2023, ActionDignity proudly partnered with the Oromian Centre Hope Foundation of Alberta (OCHFA) to secure a funding grant from the Calgary Foundation for its English Literacy and Proficiency (ELP) Program.

OCHFA joined ActionDignity as a member in 2023 and quickly became an active participant in our programs. During this time, the organization’s president highlighted the critical challenges faced by East African immigrant communities, particularly the barriers caused by limited English proficiency.

“For East African immigrants and newcomers, attaining English language proficiency and literacy is an urgent need,” the OCHFA president explained. “Over half of the 100+ individuals we referred to immigrant-serving organizations for English learning returned to us due to a one-year waiting period for English language programs. They couldn’t afford to wait. Their employment prospects and daily lives were being impacted, so they turned to OCHFA for immediate support.”

This pressing issue sparked a meaningful collaboration between OCHFA and ActionDignity. Through a productive initial meeting, we identified suitable funding opportunities and worked together to develop a compelling proposal. Thanks to the support of the Calgary Foundation, OCHFA secured the necessary funds to sustain its vital ELP program.

Now halfway through the program, the results are inspiring. Participants have improved their language skills by an average of 25%, as measured by pre-and post-program tests. These improved skills have enabled many participants to access jobs and community services more effectively, empowering them to build better lives for themselves and their families.

This success story highlights the power of collaboration and the impact that targeted funding can have in addressing the immediate needs of grassroots communities. ActionDignity is committed to empowering grassroots organizations by providing the tools, knowledge, and support they need to secure funding. By addressing systemic barriers and fostering collaboration, we help these vital organizations continue their transformative work in the community.
