Empowering Immigrant Families: A Step Toward Change by Hands Lifting Hearts Community Action Plan

In September, the Hands Lifting Hearts Initiatives Society (HLHIS) brought together Black and African immigrant families for a heartwarming and insightful community workshop, with the theme “Are You Experiencing Microaggressions Without Knowing It?” This gathering, the Community Action Plan of ActionDignity’s CORE (Collaboration and Commitment towards Racial Equity) project, focused on supporting pregnant women, new mothers, and their families as they navigate everyday challenges.

Facilitated by trusted leaders from HLHIS and ActionDignity’s Social and Economic Inclusion program Strategy Lead, Ayotunde Kayode, the session aimed to empower participants by providing them with tools to recognize the Microaggression in their daily lives and tactics to address these situations. The workshop gave participants a safe and supportive space to share their personal stories and voice their frustrations and concerns. These experiences, known as microaggressions, can often leave deep emotional scars, especially when they’re not acknowledged.

The workshop is just one piece of a larger puzzle. HLHIS is committed to addressing the systemic racism and stigmas that many immigrant families face. By continuing to organize events like these, they are helping to raise awareness and create lasting change.

The feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Participants shared that the workshop not only helped them better understand the microaggressions they experience but also gave them the strength to speak up for themselves and others in similar situations. This is just the beginning! With more events planned in the future, HLHIS and ActionDignity are dedicated to empowering immigrant families to stand strong and push for the systemic changes.
