ActionDignity and Momentum were invited to the RedFm radio to talk about the Private Career Colleges research project and way we can advocate for changes that protect students and newcomers on April 20th, 2023.
There are around 200 private career colleges (PCCs) in Alberta. PCCs play an important role in the adult education and employment system, offering learners programs to help them become more competitive in the job market. However, some PCCs engage in concerning practices and leave learners on a path to nowhere and tens of thousands of dollars in debt. Most of these students are newcomers, racialized and single mothers.
To build awareness of current issues in private career colleges, a document on “Private Career College Experiences in Alberta-Student, Staff, and Support Workers Stories” is published in partnership with Momentum, Center for Newcomers, Edmonton Mennonite Centre For Newcomers and ActionDignity. The stories will inspire policy and systematic changes to and improve the quality and oversight of private career colleges in Alberta.
