The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) has introduced a revised competency-based assessment process for professional engineer applicants this July to align with the Government of Alberta’s amendments to the Fair Registration Practices Act.
Of the existing 22 competencies currently included in the engineering CBA process, eight will now be considered mandatory Canadian work environment competencies. Under the revised approach, internationally trained applicants who do not have direct Canadian experience may demonstrate how their international experience is equivalent to expectations in a Canadian engineering environment.
This change is an encouraging example of how regulators can maintain standards for professional competence and public safety while providing more equitable ways for internationally trained applicants to demonstrate their qualifications.
