Celebrating Black History Month | Legal Empowerment in Action: Community Dialogue on Rights, Safety, and Well-Being

On February 21, ActionDignity, in partnership with the Calgary Black Seniors Foundation, organized a powerful intergenerational gathering focused on legal empowerment, human rights, community safety, and holistic well-being. Participants were engaged in meaningful discussions about Charter protections (Sections 7–14), human rights safeguards against discrimination and racial profiling, and what community safety looks like in practice.

Our speakers brought distinct and critical perspectives to the conversation, including legal expertise, human rights oversight, and frontline community safety experience:

  • Zahra Ismail, Manager of Public Information and Education, Alberta Human Rights Commission
  • Ronke Omorodion, Principal Lawyer, Lexion Legal
  • Chatim Thor, Peace Officer, City of Calgary

The discussion on legal empowerment was not about fear or confrontation; it was about clarity. It focused on being informed and confident and on refusing to diminish ourselves in spaces where we belong.

We also highlighted our ongoing policy advocacy aimed at addressing systemic barriers, specifically the non-recognition of foreign credentials and the employment requirement for “Canadian experience.”

The event concluded with an uplifting Afro dance movement session, reminding us that healing and empowerment are embodied experiences. Through rhythm and collective movement, participants released stress, reconnected with joy, and affirmed that resilience exists not only in policy and law but also in culture and community.

All these led to a vital truth:

  • Strong minds mean we stay informed.
  • Strong rights mean we stand in our dignity.
  • Strong bodies mean we care for our physical and emotional well-being.

This gathering reinforced the idea that community resilience requires more than just information; it requires structural change, collective care, and sustained advocacy.

We extend our gratitude to our speakers, partners, childcare team, and every participant who contributed to the depth, honesty, and strength of this event.

The work continues.
